Residents in Watton will be given the chance to ditch plastic carriers and bag themselves a more environmentally friendly ‘bag for life’ next week.

Breckland Council’s Pride in Breckland project has teamed up with the Wayland Chamber of Commerce and the Co-Op to hand out re-usable shopping bags in the town.

On Saturday 5 February, re-usable cotton shopping bags will be handed out at different points along the High Street. Residents can also collect their free shopping bag from the Watton Farmers Market. Bags will be available from 10am onwards and are available on a first come first served basis.

Lynda Turner, Executive Support Member for Communities said:

“Plastic bag use in the UK has reduced by nearly 50% over the past few years, simply by people switching to re-usable bags. This is a fantastic achievement but on average each UK household still gets through 400 plastic bags per year – a number of these will end up in landfill or stuck in hedges, trees or rivers. Ridding the country of plastic bags is an issue where local action can really make a difference.”

Around 13 billion plastic bags are given free to UK shoppers every year. The bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down, and like all forms of plastic they do not biodegrade and can contaminate soil, waterways and oceans, entering the food chain when ingested by animals.

Salena Dawson, Chair of the Wayland Chamber of Commerce said: “There really is no better place to shop than on your doorstep. And what better way to do it than with a free re-usable shopping bag! The Wayland Chamber of Commerce is exceptionally proud to be doing this alongside the Co-Op and Breckland Council’s Pride in Breckland Initiative.”

Come along to the Watton Farmers Market on Saturday 5th February after 10am to bag your freebie or take a wander down the High Street. You may even bump into Spike the Hedgehog!
