Chairman's Message

2nd January 2013

We have now said goodbye to 2012 with all the excitement of the Olympics and the Queen's Jubilee.

The Wayland Chamber goes forward with over 180 members. This membership makes us the strongest small Chamber locally. During the year we have built on the successes of previous years.

We have provided several information opportunities at our Breakfasts this year; learning about excellent start-ups and local support available, amongst other things. In 2013 we are going to hold events at a different time of day. We will see if we can tempt more people to come and meet and perhaps start to do more business locally.

During the year we have initiated the Watton Town Team to work to maintain and improve the vigour of our High Street. They have achieved a great deal in a short time under their Chair Chris Edwards. They have established an Entrepreneurs Market and other events. Businesses have used this to progress and perhaps go on to become retailers in premises and online. A few years ago I met the lady who started Janes of Newmarket, an upmarket ladies Fashion shop, who told me she had started at Watton market.

The Town Team go forward with great programme of events for next year. There is always room for more help and others are welcome to join the team, especially those in the High Street.

We have also established a cadre of members who are willing to give freely of their time to help other business start, survive and thrive. The session will be begin later this month.

We continue to help the Wayland Partnership, and with the support of our MP, raise our profile where there is chance of extra support for local business, either through Breckland Council, Norfolk County Council or NewAnglia Local Enterprise Partnership. The first fruit of this is the first start-up session under the Breckland contract with NWES in Watton at the end of the month.

We have given advice to all our members on how best to use the 500 characters they have on their page on the website. We now have Chamber business cards and a presence on Twitter and Facebook.

In 2012 unfortunately we have had to report the passing of Janina Dingwall who has worked hard for the Chamber over many years in particular recently masterminding the Shop Local leaflet. She will be missed greatly.

In 2012 Paul Adcock in his words "proved what you can do if you have a big mouth" and became a Daily Telegraph 'man of the year' for his work on mis-sold bank SWAPS.

Forward to 2013 and more support and promotion for our local area. We welcome fresh faces and ideas, especially from retailers, as we do not have any on our committee. Our AGM is on 13th February at 5.30pm (see our calendar for details) - do come and tell us your ideas.

Norman Wilson
